After a crazy day at Auto Club Speedway with rainy weather and track seepage issues, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was finally able to get to practice and qualifying after a delay. Juan Pablo Montoya took the Sprint Cup pole for the event with a speed of 184.653 and a time of 38.992. There were no cars that did not make the race due to only a 43 car entry list.
